Fidya / Kaffara – Amount and Applications
    What is Kaffara?

Kaffara literally means the expiation of a sin or a wrongful act.

Kaffara Donation for a Broken Fast

If someone breaks their fast during Ramadan without a valid reason, they must first sincerely repent to Allah. In addition, they are required to fast for two consecutive months. If they are unable to do so, they must feed 60 people in need. However, before resorting to breaking the two-month fast, one must have sincerely tried or had the true intention to fulfill it. Otherwise, giving donations instead of fasting is not considered valid, as fasting takes precedence.

    Kaffara Donation for Broken Vows

Kaffara must also be given when someone fails to fulfill a vow. In this case, feeding or clothing ten people in need serves as expiation.

    What is Fidya?

Fidya (also known as Fidja) is a form of compensation and substitution.

Fidya Donation for Those Unable to Fast

According to the majority of scholars, Fidya must be given by those who are unable to fast during Ramadan due to old age or chronic illness. In the case of a temporary illness, the missed days must simply be made up by fasting later, and Fidya is not an acceptable substitute. Fidya is used to feed one person in need for each day of missed fasting.

Fidya Donation for Pregnant or Nursing Women

According to one of the Prophet’s companions, Fidya also applies to pregnant or nursing women who refrain from fasting during Ramadan out of concern for their baby. They fulfill the Fidya for the missed days by feeding one person in need per day instead of fasting.

It is important to note that different schools of thought may sometimes have varying opinions on these matters.

    Calculating the Fidya Amount

In the UK, with £ 10 per person per day, you can feed someone in need.

With your donation, we can support such campaigns and provide essential aid.

We refer you to the provisions of our donation policy for further details.

So whoever of you is present during this month should fast; but whoever is ill or on a journey—then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and wants for you to complete the period and glorify Allah for that which He has guided you; perhaps you will be grateful.
